Making the Best of an Unexpected Detour

This winter has been relentless. Illness, weather, and constant schedule changes have made even simple plans feel uncertain. What was meant to be a quick weekend trip to New Orleans recently turned into something much longer. A blizzard cancelled our flight home to New York, and in the moment, we made a last-minute decision to reroute to Puerto Rico. While the sunshine and ocean have been a gift, I arrived here still recovering from the flu, working remotely, keeping up with graduate classes, and now facing an extended journey home that includes additional travel days and an unexpected stop in Atlanta.
Even in a beautiful place, I found myself feeling overwhelmed. I am someone who appreciates structure and predictability. Last-minute changes are not easy for me. This experience has been a reminder that flexibility is not always comfortable, especially when the body is tired and the mind is juggling responsibilities.
Many people are feeling the weight of this winter in similar ways. Between illness, weather disruptions, and the emotional fatigue that can build during colder months, it is not unusual to feel stretched thin. Sometimes we hold gratitude for what is good while also acknowledging that the circumstances are challenging. Both can exist at the same time.
In moments like these, a few grounding practices can help:
Acknowledge the stress.Naming that a situation feels overwhelming can reduce internal pressure. You can appreciate the opportunity to travel and still feel exhausted by the logistics.
Adjust expectations.When routines are disrupted, it may not be realistic to function at your usual pace. Prioritizing what truly needs attention and allowing space for rest can support both physical and emotional recovery.
Create small anchors.Maintaining simple routines—hydration, warm meals, brief moments of quiet, or stepping outside for fresh air—can provide stability even when everything else feels in flux.
Offer yourself compassion.Flexibility is a skill we practice over time. When plans change unexpectedly, it is natural to feel unsettled. Responding with patience rather than self-criticism can make the experience more manageable.
